In 1958, Andrea Spadini created the Lazzarone, whose status Stendhal defined in his 1811 journal defines its status: “The last class of people in Naples is famous, in all Europe, under the name of “lazzarone”. The Lazzarone is a man of the people, idle and fickle, a sort of vagabond who lives by his wits in Naples, mainly on the port. Andrea Spadini’s choice fell on a famous Lazzarone who, in fleeing after his petty theft, slipped on a rock and lost all his gold coins, which flew and the laughter that made him famous.
