Michèle Belaiche

Painter
“I started working for Didier Aaron in 1974. At the time, the company occupied a private mansion on avenue Raymond Poincaré, in the 16th arrondissement. From the basement to the 3rd floor, it was a hive of activity. The ground, first and second floors were devoted to 18th-century furniture, paintings and old drawings. The third floor belonged to Alain Demachy and Jacques Grange, surrounded by a team of designers. In the basement was the contemporary department with a Carl boutique, selling decorators’ creations: sofas, lacquer furniture, mirrors designed by Jacques Grange and Alain Demachy, David Hicks carpets, Fortuny fabrics, all managed by Françoise Dorget, who would later create the Caravane boutiques.”
After several years working in the boutique, Michèle became Jacques Grange’s assistant and witnessed his rise to prominence. As time went by, the assistant became a friend, private life and professional life becoming one. “I followed him on all his travels, to Great Britain, Greece, the United States, Saudi Arabia…” she explains. She shared in the adventure of the Château Gabriel in Deauville for Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the restructuring of a part of the Hôtel Lambert occupied by Marie-Hélène de Rothschild, the Pharaonic works for an American client who wanted to reconstitute in Los Angeles a replica of the Pavillon de La Lanterne in Versailles… Not forgetting the decoration of Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan’s home.
Her relationship with the singer developed into a deep friendship. She introduced me to a friend of hers who became my husband, much to my delight. With this marriage, I put an end to my Parisian life and we settled in Provence. I turned my back on decorating to devote myself to painting.”
