In 1958, Andrea Spadini created the Lazzarone, whose status Stendhal defined in his 1811 diary: “The last class of people in Naples is famous, throughout Europe, under the name of lazzarone”. The Lazzarone is a man of the people, idle and fickle, a sort of barefoot who lives by his wits in Naples, mainly on the port. Andrea Spadini’s choice fell on a famous Lazzarone who, fleeing after his petty theft, slipped on a rock and lost all the gold coins, which flew into the air, provoking the laughter and jeers that made him famous.
